The Dave Matthews Band gave Philly a musical gift by adding the city to the very short Fall/Winter Tour.  Philadelphia has always been a regular stop on the well-known summer tours, having two dates this year (one which was streamed live), but a winter show during the holidays?  This was a tremendous gift for the rabid fan base.  While waiting for the band to take the stage, many fans in the front had already seen him on this tour in NY greeting the tour videographer by name.

Opening with “One Sweet World,” it was like a stretch session as a mini jam session began which would be an indicator of how the show would be all night going 2+ hours in total.  After the first song, Dave commented on how much he loved the city of Philadelphia.  He said that they have the happiest people, BUT don’t dare cross them or ……” which had the crowd laughing.

The extended setlist spanned the entire DMB catalog and included some tremendous covers of “Burning Down The House” by The Talking Heads, and of course “Along The Watchtower” by Bob Dylan in the encore.  The best experience is that the band is as tight live as on any record, which is very tough to do when they go into an improvisation jam which can easily double in length than the original track.  You could tell the band was really having fun, the ever-present smile on Carter Beauford as he performed patterns which were so intricate, yet he makes it look like he is playing an early Buddy Rich kit instead of being surrounded by percussion scaffolding.  DMB’s performance doesn’t rely on stage effects, but rather allows the music to be the experience. Since this is a very short tour, I would look towards next year to get your tickets to experience this great band, when it comes through your area.
