Saint Slumber performing at The Foundry – Philadelphia 02.28.20
Last time I saw Saint Slumber they were opening for Judah & the Lion at The Met on Broad Street, they’ve opened a Radio 104.5 Birthday show at the BB&T pavilion, and recently performing alongside Adventure Club to a sold-out crowd at the legendary Madison Square Garden in NYC. They have been featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday, “MakeDamnSure,” a collaboration with Adventure Club reaching a million streams in its first month. Tonight, as we are nestled in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia in the Fillmore building, my first thought “is that this room big enough to contain their ethereal indie pop sound?

Saint Slumber is Josh Perna on vocals, rhythm guitar and supporting percussion. Josh is a true showman, commanding the stage regardless of size or rafters (more about that later). Next is Aaron Brown on lead guitar who reminds me of U2‘s The Edge with a little Muse thrown in there, creating multiple melodic layers off just six strings, and finally Matt Carpenter on drums. Matt is the total package providing massive intensity when needed, and small detailed fills at just the right moment. It was announced that this would be Matt’s final night with Saint Slumber, and naturally he gave a tremendous performance!

The venue at capacity seemed to be filled with Saint Slumber fans, as Josh was giving head nods and handshakes to many of the crowd, 4 people deep, not just at the rail. On a night which provided extra percussion with Josh and Matt trading licks as Josh ping ponged with Matt trading beats (Matt won). The band played a mix of new tunes as well as the hits the crowd sang along with all night.

Josh was all over the place, using the entire stage, the front barricade, jumping from the drum kit, and at one point even doing his best Spider-man impression as he grabbed onto a building beam and flipped upside down as the stage lights hit him at just the right moment. It was an incredible high energy send off for Matt and the crowd ate it up, with a tremendous applause as the three took a final bow.
