Clutch arrived at the Franklin Music Hall in Philly on Sunday night as part of their No Stars Above Tour and delivered a high energy performance from the moment they took the stage. Since its formation in 1991, the band’s lineup has remained relatively unchanged. Tim Sult (lead guitar), Dan Maines (bass), Jean-Paul Gaster (drums), and Neil Fallon (vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards) have continued to produce uniquely hard charging stylistic music across their 13 studio albums.
Red Fang and Dinosaur Jr. opened the show and got the crowd pumped for what was to come. As the house lights dimmed after the openers the crowd stirred in anticipation. Once the intro to “We Strive for Excellence” could be heard and Neil started belting out the lyrics, the fans unleashed their excitement giving everything they had to match the intensity of the band. They followed that up with “Slaughter Beach” from their latest album and “Crucial Velocity” from the Earth Rocker album.
Clutch ended the show with an amazing triple song encore of “The Regulator”, “Electric Worry”, and “The Wolf Man Kindly Requests…” If you have never experienced them live, do yourself a favor and find a way to see them on this tour. And if you have not already done so be sure to include Clutch’s recent studio album Sunrise on Slaughter Beach.
