Jimmy Eat World took the Skyline Stage at the Mann Music Center to perform to a packed crowd on a beautiful clear night in the city. Although the band was not touring to promote a new album, their last release Surviving came out in 2019, it did give them the freedom to show off their rich catalog of nearly three decades of music to some very devoted fans.
Jim Adkins, lead vocalist and lead guitarist, Tom Linton, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist, Zach Lind, bassist, and drummer Rick Burch started the show with “Pain” from their 2004 album Futures. Jim took a brief break between the first couple of songs to address the crowd and thank them just before the band started the all-to-familiar “If you’re listening (whoa oh-oh-oh-oh)” the intro to “Sweetness” a hit from the 2001 album Bleed American. It was at that point that everyone was locked in, and the strong crowd participation continued throughout the night.
The band shared the stage with openers Middle Kids, from Sydney Australia who formed in 2016, and tour co-headliners Manchester Orchestra the Atlanta based indie powerhouse who formed in 2004. The entire lineup put on stellar performances for the packed outdoor venue. The experience from on top of the hill at The Mann Center’s complex in West Fairmount Park showcased why it is a perfect place for this type of show. The sound resonates throughout the entire venue, and the large screen displays ensure that even those all the way in the back have a clear view of the performance.
Jimmy Eat World ended their set with “The Middle” from their 2001 album Bleed American. The band puts on a masterful live performance full of tremendous energy. They thanked all in attendance serval times during the show and specifically at the close when all four members joined center stage for one last heartfelt show of appreciation. If you have never seen them live, or if it has been a while, definitely make the concerted effort to catch one of their shows, you will thank me later.
